ABOUT

Reefs for Life is dedicated to "Transforming Communities Through Conservation"

Reefs For Life is a non-profit, non-government organization, founded through the vision of Bryan and Jacinda Martin, that is dedicated to establishing restorative reef projects in world areas of need.  Reefs for Life is using the latest science, technology, and volunteer efforts to reverse the tragic demise experienced by so many of the worlds coral reefs.

This Vision to transform endangered coral reef communities through conservation started at a young age for Bryan and Jacinda, who both grew up in Southern California with a great appreciation for the ocean. Together, as a young couple, they realized their call in life was to go to the Philippines and serve the people in the remote coastal communities lining the island.  A mission an passion they now share with their children.

After spending nearly a decade with the residents, they began to see that much of the domestic poverty was due to imprudent fishing practices leading to environmental degradation. The present generation was not living the same level of abundance of their recent ancestors. Destruction of the reefs in and around the Caramoan area had brought havoc to their fishing supply.

They began to seek solutions to the loss of adequate fishing grounds in their local coastal community and developed a program which focuses on the poorest and most disadvantaged coastal communities, because that is where the impact is greatest:

  • Empowers local communities through education

  • Begins the restoration process for the all-important reefs

  • Establishes protection safeguards for the new reef development

  • Insures sustainable changes through community transformation and reef restoration

The launch of their conservation effort is the Caramoan Coral Reef Project [CCRP] in the Philippines is our launching effort and is serving the people of Caramoan, Camarines Sur.

  • Indonesia and the Philippines hold 77% of Southeast Asia's coral reefs and nearly 80% of threatened reefs. WWF Global

  • The total economic value of Philippine reefs is estimated at $1.1 billion annually. WWF Global

CCRP’s mission is to transform communities through conservation so that sustainable uses of the environment are practiced and enforced, preserving biodiversity for future generations and restoring the local population's old self-reliance upon the sea for both fishing and provision.

We invite you to join in our efforts!
